The Pagosa Springs Photography Club will meet Wednesday evening April 10 at the Shy Rabbit Contemporary Art Center of Pagosa Springs, 333 Bastille Drive. Join us for socializing starting at 6:00 p.m., followed by the program, photo critiquing and business meeting at 6:30 p.m.

T.J. Reynolds will be leading the meeting. The program will involve member participation where each member will bring as many as 30 images to show and to discuss the vision that inspired the image as well as the strengths that were visualized in the composition. I hope everyone will participate.

May 8

The Pagosa Springs Photography Club will meet Wednesday evening May 8 at the Shy Rabbit Contemporary Art Center of Pagosa Springs, 333 Bastille Drive. Join us for socializing starting at 6:00 p.m., followed by the program, photo critiquing and business meeting at 6:30 p.m.

Al Olson will present a program where he will  discuss and provide examples of posed and candid photography as well as hand-held photography that includes photographing sports events, concerts, etc. The examples will be discussed to explain his decisions for composition and lighting and how they enable me to tell a story. Al will highlight the process for making the ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ photo that was featured on the front page of the Preview section including examples that were not published.

A photo exhibit is held during each club meeting. This month we will only having an open category where any subject is allowed. The Photographers includes a behind-the-scenes look into the lives of National Geographic photographers and how they get the shot presented in a compelling one-hour program

The Pagosa Photo Club is pleased to present this month's program "Photographing the Weather" by John Farley. This will be a Power Point slide show oriented toward photographing  interesting weather phenomena. John retired in 2006 after 29 years as a sociology professor at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. He focuses now on some of his main post-retirement activities: photography, the study and observation of weather, and lecturing. John is also this month's guest artist at "Pagosa Photography" Gallery, 480 San Juan Street.

The Pagosa Photo Club is pleased to present this month's program a PBS DVD American Horizons: The Photographs of Art Sinsabaugh . Art Sinsabaugh made his artistic breakthrough in the early 1960s with panoramic landscapes of the midwest that were unprecedented in both form and subject matter. Trained at Chicago's Institute of Design, Sinsabaugh was a landscape photographer who photographed the spaces that people inhabit. From his early prairies to the majestic work of his last years, his remarkable photographs capture the ever-changing face of the American environment.

The Pagosa Photo Club is pleased to present this month's program "Tips and Tricks using Photoshop Elements" by Al Olson. Al will demonstrate the tips and tricks with Elements 2 and Elements 10, so you should be able use with any versions of Elements.

A photo exhibit is held during each club meeting. Two categories are presented -- the monthly theme category and the open category where any subject is allowed. The theme for the November meeting is curves. Members may enter as many as three prints or six digital images on a flash card. President Al Olson will lead the critique of photos. It will be done as a group rather than by specified judges.

The Pagosa Springs Photography Club invites the public to their artists’ reception and exhibit opening for their annual juried show. The event will be held at Pagosa Photography Studio & Gallery, 480 San Juan Street (across from the county courthouse) 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. September 12. This year twelve artists submitted entries and thirty-six photos were juried into the exhibit.  Paul Boyer, who has his studio at the Open Shutter Gallery in Durango, juried this year’s show and selected the entries for first, second and third place awards. Paul also juried the past five photo exhibits at the Archuleta County Fair.

At the opening there will be an award of $100 for the first place photo, $75 for second place, and $50 for third place. Please join the artists for this event (there is no charge).

Accepted prints are mounted per a standard artist presentation format: black frame and a white or black mat with maximum framed artwork width no greater than 26 inches and minimum print size of 80 square inches. The juried photos will be for sale at reasonable prices during the exhibit which runs from September 12 to October 10.

The Pagosa Springs photo club will hold a juried exhibit opening on September 12th at "Pagosa Photography" Gallery, 480 San Juan Street. This event will be open to current Pagosa Springs Photography Club members and others who join for the 2012-2013 season. Interested photography enthusiasts are invited to join for annual dues of $20 for single individuals, $30 for family, or $10 for student membership. The club has lined up Paul Boyer, who has his studio in the rear of Open Shutter, to jury the show. Paul will be selecting only 36 entries for the show. Paul has juried the past five photo shows at the Archuleta County Fair. There will be a $100.00 award for first place entry, a $75 award for the second place, and $50.00 for the third place entry.

There is a submission deadline for August 18, 2012. A fee of $5 is charged for each entered artwork with a limit of five image entries per participant. Images previously exhibited in other Pagosa Springs shows are not eligible. Artwork submitted for judging consideration shall be print ready JPG image on a CD or DVD disk delivery to exhibit chairman T.J. Reynolds rmp1950@msn.com 970-731-9581. Please rename the files with your last name followed by the entry number on the entry form. In summary, your entry will include a completed entry form, a CD/DVD with the image files on it and a check payable to the Pagosa Springs Photography Club.
Photographers are encouraged to offer their prints for sale. The price must be designated on the entry form. There will be a 30% commission for framed prints sold during this exhibit so consider this when you set your price. For prints not for sale, enter NSF.

Each print accepted by the juror shall be mounted artist presentation format with framed prints in black frames and a white or black mat. Maximum framed artwork width shall be no greater than 26 inches with a minimum print size of 80 square inches. There is no limit for frame height as long as it is reasonable. The artwork must be supplied with hanging wire that is firmly attached to it. Framed photos must have screw eyes and wire hanger. The name of the photographer must be written on the back of the artwork. Deadline for delivery of the selected  artwork is September 10th.

April 11 Meeting

 The April meeting will be an open presentation by members of their work.  All members are encouraged to bring their 20 favorite photos in digital format.  Members should be willing to discuss their photos including their aim, the time and place of the photo, processing, etc.

This will be a Power Point slide show oriented toward getting judged in competitions with tips and observations Al has gleaned from watching judges' and hearing their comments. The talk will include good and bad examples for many of the points in my lists. It will be very informative and enjoyable.

A photo exhibit is held during each club meeting. Two categories are presented -- the monthly theme category and the open category where any subject is allowed. This month’s theme is "Black and White". Members are encouraged to bring 3 of their photos that are in black and white or have been converted to b/w.  Members may enter as many as three prints or six digital images. The Pagosa Photo Club month's program will be members' night. This program is to give the each member an opportunity to exhibit their work in slide show format. The work should relate to theme and/or style that they are trying to achieve in their work, especially for any ongoing projects. Approximately 40 images with a 10 minute limit for each member.

The Pagosa Photo Club is pleased to present this month's program a tutorial on Photoshop Camera Raw by Dale Malaney. The talk will include white balancing, lens correction, converting to black & white, using adjustment brush, and the straightening tool. It will be very informative and enjoyable.

Two categories are presented each month, with this month’s theme being “ close-ups of small objects” and the open category where any subject is allowed. Members may enter as many as three prints or six digital images. Good news our projector has been calibrated and is greatly improved. President Bob Winners will lead the critique of photos. The Pagosa Photo Club is pleased to present this month's program "Bring Your Camera".  Have you always wanted to take better pictures?  Interested in the details of photography, but don't know where to go?  Visit with the Pagosa Photo Club members at this month's meeting.  Bring your camera (no camera phones, please) and your questions.  Also please bring the camera manual too, if you can find it!  Discuss exposure, framing and other tips 'n photo tricks. Are you new to the area?  Our members know where the 'good' shots are to be had.  Join us Wednesday November 9th to talk about your questions about how and where to shoot the lovely Colorado Mountains... and elsewhere.  So if you are beginner, intermediate, or expert photography enthusiasts there will be something for you and as always, there is no charge for the first meeting.


The photo exhibit this month will be a slideshow of Pagosa Area View.  Each member is requested to bring six prints or digital images of the Pagosa area.  Good news our projector has been calibrated and is greatly improved. Because of the type of meeting there will be no formal critique of the photo this month.
